Direct Debits, Fixed vs Variable
Contracts with utility companies almost invariably require us to to pay by Direct Debit (DD). Almost without exception, they push fixed monthly payments at us by plugging the benefit of avoiding difficulties with large winter bills. However, they invariably suggest higher monthly payments than are necessary and as a…

Smart meter connections
Our supplier has been unable to connect to our new smart meter, as the meter cannot get a mobile phone signal. I am sure we aren't the only rural energy customers who live in an area with poor mobile phone signal. We read about plans for a secure, dedicated network for smart meters which will not rely on mobile phone…

EDF Smart Meter installation (lack of) appointments
I'm with EDF (dual-fuel) and have been for a few years now. I still have 'dumb' meters. I'm in no particular rush to get a smart meter, but every month when I submit my meter readings out of curiosity I take a quick look (by clicking/tapping on 'Book an installation') to see if there are any available slots for a smart…

Using Scottish Power EV Tariff
I would encourage anyone using the Scottish Power's EV Tariff to check their electricity bill carefully. Three times in a row my bill has had adding up errors in it, the mistake being in their favour! Having tried to get them to fix the problem twice, I have switched to Octopus and received a final bill from Scottish Power…

Octopus Tracker
I just wondered about people's experiences with this tariff and whether they feel they are winners or losers. I got a quote from them yesterday, and I have to say I find the numbers highly misleading. The figures are very attractive, beating even the good fixed rate tariff I got from Avro, but presumably based on an…

Octopus Go Intelligent Tariff - recent changes
Can anyone understand the recent changes? I've watched several YouTube videos and they all have a different interpretation of the new and highly complicated rules. It's very hard to make heads or tails. To make matters worse, a friend who's already with Octopus (I'm still considering, having now bought an EV) told me about…

Back billing - but in credit so Energy Ombudsman found in favour of supplier
Can anyone help with this please? We had a bill shock in September 2025 when our energy supplier sent us our statement and had taken an extra £400 for energy used in March 2023 that they had not charged us for through their own error. (We had provided meter readings). Over the years we had maintained the suggested direct…

Government Price reduction in April
I am in the process of switching energy supplier from Octopus to British gas under the MSE collective. In your weekly emails, you are saying that both suppliers will reduce their tariffs accordingly in April. I have contacted both companies and they both said they will NOT be reducing their tariffs as they are fixed. What…

E7 Contactor Installation
I am on an E7 contract with Octopus with new storage heaters. When the electrician fitted the new heaters, he removed the 3 phase contactor and put everything on 24hr to avoid having to fit new 24hr feeds on the same phase as the heaters. Charging period is currently controlled at the heater level which works fine, but…

Anyone used Rointe heaters?
We've currently got storage heaters as we don't have gas but they are proving to be very expensive to use. A friend has suggested these as a replacement and their sales blurb seems quite convincing but cannot find any real world reviews anywhere Any advice would be appreciated as we're freezing our bits of!!!

Accessing my smart meter data?
Previously I had a zigbee hall sensor taped to the front of my gas meter and it detected the magnet on the first unit as it turned, I was able to capture this data and put it into graphs etc. With my new smart meters I obviously cannot do this, can I get access to my half-hourly usage data somehow?
